MODULE THREE - ISO AND DOCUMENT STRATEGY

Process Mapping: A Prelude to Documentation

Process maps are very high level flow charts depicting the key steps in a process. A good process map clearly defines process inputs and outputs, and illustrates all cross function connect (or disconnect) points. A good process map provides technical communicators a starting point for the documentation they are writing, and can be included in the documentation as a supplement to the text - many ISO consultants highly recommend the use of process maps in the documentation.

Process maps are strongly recommended if your documentation effort involves a number of people in the writing effort. They act as 'roadmaps' through the process and ensure that all bases are covered. They can also be used to break down the documentation effort into small segments so the writing effort can be spread amongst members of the writing group.
